SHOOTING

I like to keep things as simple as I can. I like to work alone with my sitter: session are fast, relaxed and very informal. I'm not a great fan of heavy makeup, fancy poses or complex lighting setup, I'm much more interested in creating authentic and natural photos using natural light wherever possible.

I mainly use black and white film.

PROCESS

I process by myself any black and white negatives. That gives me total control over the final exposure and look. I use an external lab to develop colour and reversal film.

After the developing process, every picture is scanned at high resolution up to 20 megapixels.

PRINTS

Digital prints from the digitized negatives are included. On request I can provide traditional silver gelatine prints made manually in the darkroom. Please contact me for pricing.

Questions

Some information about the process

WHAT CAMERAS DO YOU USE?

I mainly work with medium format film cameras. Occasionally I use 35mm and large format cameras ranging from 4x5 up to 8x10.

CAN I HAVE THE NEGATIVES?

I never give away the original negatives.

WHAT ABOUT RETOUCHING?

Basically I never retouch my images. What you see comes straight from the original negative without manipulation. Occasionally I crop some pictures and adjust the contrast, nothing else.

WHY SHOOTING FILM?

I simply prefer its unique texture, tonality and look. A lot of photographers want their digital pictures to look like film, but I've never heard of anybody that wanted a film photograph to look like digital. I just decided to shoot directly with film. I also love the manual process of film shooting, it's definetely more enjoyable than sitting in front of a computer.

IT IS A SLOW PROCESS?

Usually it takes no more than few days from the shooting to the final images. I process the film and take care of everything by myself. When I have to use an external lab things are a bit slower.

FILM OF CHOICE?

For BW pictures Kodak Tmax 400 and Ilford HP5. My favourite colour film is Kodak Portra 160. When I have time I love to experiment with any kind of light sensitive material.

DO YOU ACCEPT TFP SESSIONS?

If the project is interesting I really like to collaborate for a Time For Print session.

My cameras

Self built equipment

A big part of my large format work is made with self built cameras.

5x7 MONORAIL CAMERA

Made from laser cut plywood it allows every front movement and some back swing. I use two homemade lenses with a rapid rectilinear design: a 250 mm and a 300 mm both at f 5.6, better if used at f 8.

4x5 BOX CAMERA

A very simple 4x5 camera inspired by 19th century models. Has a focal lenght of 160 mm and shots vertical pictures only.
